A standard hot tub heater converts electricity straight into heat — which is expensive. An air-source heat pump works like a reverse fridge, extracting warmth from the surrounding air and transferring it to your water. For every unit of electricity used, a good heat pump typically produces four to six units of heat.

The result is noticeably lower running costs — particularly valuable if you use your hot tub through winter.

Most installations are completed in a single visit. Here's how it works from first contact to a running heat pump.

Assessment & recommendation

We assess your setup remotely where possible — send us photos and video of your hot tub, equipment bay and available space and we'll specify the right unit in most cases. Where a physical assessment is needed (more complex installs or larger volumes), a paid site visit is arranged. We'll confirm which approach suits your setup when you get in touch.

Step 2

Unit ordered, date confirmed

Once you're happy to proceed we order your unit and confirm an installation date. Typical lead times are 3–7 days depending on model and availability.

Step 3 — fitting day

Installation & commissioning

We position the unit, make the plumbing connections via the bypass kit, connect the electrics, and commission the heat pump. Your hot tub is back in use the same day.

How noisy are heat pumps?

Standard models (O'Spa, IceSpa) run at around 52–58dB at one metre — comparable to a quiet dishwasher or background conversation. The Aquark Mr Silence drops this to around 45dB, which is noticeably quieter and the right choice if the unit will be close to a neighbour's boundary or a bedroom window. All units are significantly quieter than they were five years ago and most customers stop noticing them within a week.

Do I need planning permission?

In most cases, no. Hot tub air source heat pumps fall under permitted development for domestic properties in England, meaning no planning application is needed. However there are exceptions — if you're in a conservation area, a listed building, or on certain types of restricted land, different rules may apply. We'll flag any concerns during the survey. If you're unsure, your local planning authority can confirm in writing.

Do they work in winter?

Yes — though efficiency drops as outdoor temperature falls. Standard models work down to around -5°C. The Poolex IceSpa is specifically engineered for cold weather operation and maintains strong COP figures well below freezing. For most Lincolnshire winters the IceSpa is the right choice if you use the tub year-round. If temperatures drop unusually low, the hot tub's own built-in heater will top up automatically — so you're never left without heat.

What warranty do I get?

All models come with a manufacturer warranty — typically 2 years parts and labour on the Poolex range, and 2 years on the Aquark Mr Silence and Inverboost PBS. As your installer we're your first point of contact for any warranty issues — you don't need to deal with the manufacturer directly. We'll handle it.

Will it work with my existing hot tub?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. Heat pumps connect via a bypass kit that plumbs into your existing pipework — no changes to the tub itself. The main requirements are a suitable outdoor power supply and enough space around the unit for airflow. The O'Spa and IceSpa use a 1" connection common to most domestic hot tubs; the Inverboost PBS uses 1.5" for larger volumes. We'll confirm compatibility at the survey stage.

How long does it take to heat from cold?

Longer than the built-in heater alone — which is why we always recommend leaving the hot tub on a low holding temperature (around 30°C) rather than heating from cold each time. Heating from 15°C to 38°C on a 1,500L tub typically takes 8–14 hours with a 5–7kW heat pump in moderate weather. In practice most owners set it overnight or several hours before use. Pairing the heat pump with a quality insulated cover — which we also supply — makes a significant difference to reheat times.

What electrical supply do I need?

The 5kW and 7kW models run on a standard 13A outdoor socket — no special supply needed beyond what your hot tub already has. Larger Inverboost PBS models may require a dedicated circuit depending on output. We check this at survey and will tell you clearly if any electrical work is needed before you commit. We can recommend a qualified electrician if required.
