Balboa vs Gecko Hot Tub Control Systems — What's the Difference?

5 min read  ·  TopTubs Lincolnshire Ltd

If you're researching hot tubs or have been told your control system needs replacing, you'll come across two dominant brands: Balboa and Gecko. This guide explains what they are, how they differ, and why it matters.

What is a hot tub control system?

The control system (also called the pack or topside) is the brain of your hot tub. It manages the heater, pumps, lighting and temperature, and is what you interact with via the panel on the tub's edge. The pack is housed in the equipment bay; the topside panel is the user interface.

Balboa Water Group

Balboa is the market leader in hot tub control systems, used in the majority of branded hot tubs sold in the UK and US. Key characteristics:

  • Wide availability of replacement parts and topside panels
  • Engineers familiar with Balboa systems throughout the UK
  • Well-documented error codes and troubleshooting
  • Systems include: BP series, VS series, EL series, TP series topsides
  • Wi-Fi modules available for app control on modern systems

The Balboa VS501Z, VS502Z and BP2100 are particularly common in mid-range tubs. The newer BP500 series includes full app integration.

Gecko Alliance

Gecko is the second major player — a Canadian company widely used in premium and mid-range tubs. Key characteristics:

  • Known for reliability and build quality
  • iS, IN.YE and IN.XE systems are widely deployed
  • Excellent app connectivity with the inTouch system
  • Parts available but less universally stocked than Balboa
  • Slightly more expensive to repair due to part cost and availability

Does it matter when buying a hot tub?

Yes — particularly for long-term ownership. Consider:

  • Parts availability: Can your local engineer source parts for the system? Balboa parts are easier to find in the UK.
  • Engineer familiarity: Most UK engineers work comfortably with both, but Balboa is more commonly encountered.
  • Avoid proprietary systems: Some lower-cost tubs use control systems with no independent repair pathway — if it fails, the only option is a full replacement from the original manufacturer at inflated cost.

Replacing a control system

Control system failure is a repairable situation. Most Balboa and Gecko packs can be replaced without replacing the tub — often at £400–£800 including parts and labour. However, this requires ensuring compatibility with your existing pumps, heater and wiring.

We work on both Balboa and Gecko systems and stock common replacement parts. Get in touch if your control system is showing faults or has failed.
