The pump is the heart of your hot tub. When it fails, you'll notice immediately — either through no jet flow, strange noises, or error codes on the panel. This guide helps you understand what's happening and whether it needs professional repair.
If the pump makes no sound and produces no flow, possible causes are:
A humming pump that doesn't produce flow is either seizing, air-locked, or has a failed start capacitor. Try a power cycle first. If it continues to hum without starting after 10 seconds, switch it off — running a seized pump causes overheating and permanent damage.
Different noises indicate different problems:
Water pooling beneath the pump usually indicates a failed mechanical seal. The pump wet end may be rebuildable with a seal kit, or replacement of the whole wet end (keeping the motor) is often the most cost-effective repair.
Many hot tubs have two pumps: a high-flow jet pump (which powers the jets) and a small continuous circulation pump (which filters and heats the water quietly). They fail independently. If the jets work but the tub won't heat, the circ pump may have failed. If the jets don't work but the water is heating, the jet pump is the issue.
Technically yes, but it involves draining the tub, working with plumbing unions and electrical connections, and matching the correct pump specification. Most people find it's not worth the risk of getting it wrong. We stock a range of replacement pumps (Balboa, Waterway, LX) and can typically replace a pump in a single visit.
