Hot Tub Pump Not Working — Diagnosis Guide

5 min read  ·  TopTubs Lincolnshire Ltd

The pump is the heart of your hot tub. When it fails, you'll notice immediately — either through no jet flow, strange noises, or error codes on the panel. This guide helps you understand what's happening and whether it needs professional repair.

Types of pump faults

Pump doesn't run at all

If the pump makes no sound and produces no flow, possible causes are:

  • Tripped breaker — check the electrical panel first
  • Thermal overload cutout — the pump overheated and has temporarily shut down. Let it cool for 30 minutes and try again.
  • Failed capacitor — the component that starts the motor. The pump may hum without starting. Capacitor replacement is a low-cost repair.
  • Burned-out motor windings — the pump will need replacement

Pump hums but doesn't spin

A humming pump that doesn't produce flow is either seizing, air-locked, or has a failed start capacitor. Try a power cycle first. If it continues to hum without starting after 10 seconds, switch it off — running a seized pump causes overheating and permanent damage.

Pump is noisy

Different noises indicate different problems:

  • Cavitation (loud gurgling/sucking): The pump is drawing in air — check for air locks, low water level, or a blocked filter
  • Grinding: Bearing failure — the pump will need replacing
  • Squealing: Often early bearing failure or a worn seal
  • Rattling: Check for debris in the impeller housing

Pump leaks

Water pooling beneath the pump usually indicates a failed mechanical seal. The pump wet end may be rebuildable with a seal kit, or replacement of the whole wet end (keeping the motor) is often the most cost-effective repair.

Jet pump vs circulation pump

Many hot tubs have two pumps: a high-flow jet pump (which powers the jets) and a small continuous circulation pump (which filters and heats the water quietly). They fail independently. If the jets work but the tub won't heat, the circ pump may have failed. If the jets don't work but the water is heating, the jet pump is the issue.

Can you replace a pump yourself?

Technically yes, but it involves draining the tub, working with plumbing unions and electrical connections, and matching the correct pump specification. Most people find it's not worth the risk of getting it wrong. We stock a range of replacement pumps (Balboa, Waterway, LX) and can typically replace a pump in a single visit.
